Your dream vacation at Lake Baikal starts here
For 14 years, we have been creating amazing Lake Baikal tours and we can say that a Lake Baikal vacation is more than just an unforgettable pastime. It is the enjoyment of fresh winds, bright sunshine, and crystal-clear water. There are many places to visit at Baikal, and even visiting just one of them will leave you with a wealth of impressions. Olkhon Island is one of the largest among three dozen islands. Its length is 71 km, and its width is about 15 km. The seven-kilometer-wide Olkhon Gate strait separates it from the mainland. The island's landscape is diverse: the western coast is flat, while the eastern is rocky and mountainous. The vegetation is varied as well. Most of northern and southern Olkhon are steppes, while the rest consists of dense pine thickets, birch groves, and magnificent larches. All of this is truly breathtaking.
Heavy rains on the island are rare, and overall precipitation is low. However, there are three times as many sunny days here as in Irkutsk. According to one version, the word Olkhon comes from the Buryat word "oykhon" (wooded), and according to another, from "olkhan" (dry). Both versions perfectly describe the island's climate and nature.
